I started writing 'In The Cutty' as a single man and finished it not too long after meeting my ex during a 2019 trip to Toronto. This song comes from a place of pure ego.

One of my first times hanging out with her, we were in a group with another couple and a guy friend of hers. The Toronto natives decided we should hit up Cold Tea bar in Kensington Market. As we all entered the bar I saw her and her "guy friend" holding hands, while making their way through the crowd. It threw me off, cuz I had already spent a wonderful night out with her a few days earlier, and we had our first kiss. But now I realized I was in competition for her attention. Let the games begin.

Maybe he didn't have a real romantic chance with her. Maybe she wasn't honest about the true nature of their relationship. At that moment in time I couldn't tell, but I knew what I felt. So I turned the mackin' up on a 1000. Every chance her and I got to be alone that day we were making out. I was staking my claim. It was the last day of my trip and I wanted it to be known that I liked her a lot.

I was set on returning to Toronto to see her again. After a more intimate follow-up trip three months later the fully fleshed out concept for 'In The Cutty' was born. It's like a victory song to my ego.

In retrospect, I should've have seen the red flags, but my ego left me blind to the warning signs.
